MAGNESIUM: The Wonder Nutrient!

DID YOU KNOW!? Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body, and it is used by literally every organ!

So it’s kinda, sorta, REALLY important!!

I would be here all week if I listed every single thing that magnesium is good for!! So here are just SOME of the important ones:

  • Muscle and nerve health
  • Liver function and detoxification
  • Blood sugar regulation and metabolism
  • Proper digestive function
  • Bone health
  • Energy production
  • Quality effective sleep
  • Brain function
  • Nervous system (anxiety, depression, healthy mood)

It’s quite well known that magnesium is depleted during exercise, by our muscles, but most people don’t realise that one of the biggest things that depletes magnesium is STRESS!!  The brain, nervous system and adrenal glands (which pump out adrenaline and cortisol when we are stressed) all burn through magnesium like rocket fuel… Exposure to electromagnetic radiation from screens like our phones, computers and TV also depletes magnesium! …So basically, just living in this modern day world, makes it nearly impossible to NOT be low on magnesium.

There are lots of foods high in magnesium:

  • Nuts and seeds
  • Bananas
  • Spinach
  • Avocado
  • Whole grains
  • Legumes
  • My favourite = cacao!!  (Good quality dark chocolate)

Topping up on these delicious foods every day is a very good idea!! But at the rate we burn through it, and sadly due to the fact our soils are now quite depleted in magnesium, it is quite difficult to get enough in; particularly if you are quite busy or stressed!

SIGNS that you may be LOW IN MAGNESIUM:

  • Low Energy
  • Headaches
  • Muscle tightness, aches, twitches or cramps
  • Poor sleep (especially broken sleep)
  • High blood pressure
  • Palpitations, irregular heart beat
  • Constipation
  • Anxiety, Depression, Mood imbalances
  • Chocolate Cravings
    (especially before your period ladies!)

MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTS:

Supplementing with magnesium may be a good idea, but you really need to be careful which supplement you are using! There are many different forms of magnesium and unfortunately, they aren’t all created equally!! There are so many cheap and nasty forms of poorly absorbed magnesium supplements out there (magnesium oxide, I’m talkin’ ‘bout YOU!!).

Taking these may lead to digestive irritation and poor absorption = resulting in diarrhoea and little to no benefit!!

Lose, lose situation!

However, a good quality magnesium supplement needs to be chosen for your specific needs and taken at the correct therapeutic dose and at the correct time of day. So it is a very good idea to seek some support from a qualified practitioner who can hook you up with the goods! The right form of magnesium, and the right therapeutic dose for you and your individual needs and circumstances can work WONDERS!

Better sleep, Better stress coping and Better energy!! Yes please!!

OTHER WAYS to get Magnesium:

You can also absorb magnesium ‘trans-dermally’ (which means ‘via your skin’) if you use a good quality magnesium oil in a spray or roll on. This can be a great way to choose specific sore muscles to send the magnesium to, and also a great option if your tummy finds magnesium a little tricky to absorb!

My top tip is to look for 100% pure Magnesium chloride in the ingredient list! (Available in our Nurture store in clinic).

My absolute FAVORITE way to top up my magnesium is a beautiful warm bath with a cup of pure Magnesium Chloride flakes and calming essential oils! BLISS!!!

Happy soaking!
