TOP TIPS FOR A HAPPY MICROBIOME

Your Microbiome is the collective family of bacteria that not only live in our digestive tract, but all over our body, especially within our reproductive tract and on our skin!

Did you know that from head to toe, we are actually made up of more bacterial DNA than human DNA!? Our microbiome is hugely involved in so many areas of healthy functioning and optimal wellbeing.

Many people are aware of the role the ‘good bacteria’ plays in keeping our digestive health in tip top shape, protecting the digestive tract and assisting in digestion and assimilation of nutrients.

But wait, there’s MORE! The role of the bacteria that make up our microbiome is hugely important for our immune health, our metabolism, our hormone health and also our mental health!! It feels like every time I look at a new research paper, science has discovered yet another vital role our microbiome plays! …So it’s a very good idea to keep these good bugs happy!!

Try to avoid poor quality processed foods, refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, excess caffeine, alcohol and unnecessary medication/drug use. These create an inflammatory environment that is not-so-supportive to our good bugs, but where the ‘bad bugs’ flourish.

What you can focus on is making sure you include plenty of both PRE- & PRO- biotics each day!

What’s the difference I hear you ask!?

PRE-BIOTICS: these are high fibre foods that feed your good bugs. Apples, bananas, asparagus, green leafy vegetables and chia & flax seeds are all great options.

PRO-BIOTICS: rich fermented foods – such as good quality yoghurts, kefir, kombucha, kim chi, sauerkraut and even apple cider vinegar all contain great amounts of healthy good bacteria to help keep your body happy and healthy!
